First Announcement &
Call for Abstracts
The first Biennial International Workshop "Fullerenes and Atomic Clusters"
(IWFAC) was held in St.Petersburg in October 1993. Since that time,
the IWFAC has become one of the most representatives of world meetings
in the field of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes. One important reason
for this is the participation in the 93-01 IWFACs of the founders
of this science as well as the scientists having the major influence
in this field. More than 300 participants from leading scientific
centers and universities around the world take part in IWFACs.
As with previous workshops, the 6th Workshop to be held in 2003 will
be organized within the framework of the Russian Research Program
"Fullerenes and Atomic Clusters".
All IWFACs are sponsored by the Russian
Foundation for Basic Research and by the Ministry
of Industry, Science and Technologies of Russia. IWFAC 2001
was also supported by INTAS.
Proceedings of former IWFACs have been published as special issues
of Molecular Materials (vol.4, 1994; vol.7-8, 1996; vol.10-11, 1998;
vol.13, 2000) and Physics
of the Solid State (vol.44, N 3-4, 2002).

Scientific Programm
The program will traditionally include lectures by invited speakers,
oral presentations and several poster sessions. The lectures and oral
presentations will generally concentrate on the most recent advances
in the following areas:
|
new approaches for mass production fullerenes and carbon nanotubes |
|
physical properties of endohedral
fullerenes |
|
magnetic properties and superconductivity
of fullerenes |
|
electronic properties of nanotubes |
|
synthesis and chemical properties
of fullerene derivatives |
|
carbon onions |
|
phase transitions in fullerenes |
|
photoelectric and optic properties
of fullerenes |
|
fullerene containing polymers |
|
synthesis and properties of new fullerene-like materials
|
|
biological aspects of carbon clusters |
|
computer simulation of carbon cluster formation |
Invited speakers will be chosen
by the Program Committee and the International Advisory Committee.
Reports to be presented will be selected by the Program Committee
on the basis of submitted abstracts.
The list of invited lecturers, deadlines for manuscripts and related
information will be given in the Second Announcement scheduled for
December, 2002. According to tradition, a panel discussion "Fullerene
applications" will be held. Special prizes for the best presentation
among young participants (younger than 33 years) also has been planned.
The Organizing and Program Committees hope that you will enjoy
the Workshop and 10 years after the first IWFAC, you will learn
of the many new achievements in the wonderful world of carbon clusters.
Language
All contributions should be presented in English that is the official
language of the Workshop. No simultaneous translation services will
be provided.
Submission of Contributions
Authors are requested to submit a one-page abstract of their contributions
(about 1800 symbols including title, name(s) of author(s) and affiliation(s))
in Word for Windows file.
The deadline for abstracts is March 1, 2003. All abstracts have to
be sent by e-mail: IWFAC@mail.ioffe.ru
File should be called by the name of the principal author (for
example, "Clinton.doc") The name of the principal author who will
present a paper at the Workshop - should be underlined. All the
abstracts will be reviewed and the criterion of rejection will be
a lack of originality.
Accepted abstracts will be published in the program booklet by
the beginning of the Workshop.
Social Programme
All IWFACs have been and will continue to be held in St.Petersburg,
which is both a scientific and cultural center.
This beautiful city was designed and built by Russian and Western
architects and is often called "the Venice of the North".
St.Petersburg will celebrate its 300th anniversary in the year 2003.
Along with the scientific sessions, a broad social program is planned
for participants and accompanying persons.
