The Department was founded in early 50-s by Prof. E. F. Gross (1897-1972), who was the distinguished scientist in the field of optical spectroscopy of condensed matter. His first world recognized discovery consisted in pioneering experimental observation (1930) of fine structure of Rayleigh scattering line due to Brillouin-Mandelstam light scattering on acoustic waves in condensed matter. His another world known achievement consisted in experimental discovery (1951) of hydrogen-like exciton optical spectrum in semiconductor crystals of cuprous oxide. The scientific interests of Prof. Gross in electronic and vibrational spectroscopies of condensed matter in great extent have influenced on appearance and development of main  directions of  research activity in department, which main general goal is the study by optical spectroscopy means of electronic and phononic properties of solids.



Presently the Department of Solid State Optics consists of two laboratories:
