The Department was founded in early 50-s by Prof. E. F. Gross (1897-1972),
who was the distinguished scientist in the field of optical spectroscopy
of condensed matter. His first world recognized discovery consisted in
pioneering experimental observation (1930) of fine structure of Rayleigh
scattering line due to Brillouin-Mandelstam light scattering on acoustic
waves in condensed matter. His another world known achievement consisted
in experimental discovery (1951) of hydrogen-like exciton optical spectrum
in semiconductor crystals of cuprous oxide. The scientific interests of
Prof. Gross in electronic and vibrational spectroscopies of condensed matter
in great extent have influenced on appearance and development of main
directions of research activity in department, which main general
goal is the study by optical spectroscopy means of electronic and phononic
properties of solids.
